Interview with Dominique Serrand

A video interview with Dominique Serrand, one of the principals of Theater de la Jeune Leune, a Minneapolis theatre which recently closed. Jeune Leune was known for their physical theatre-- I believe that Serrand or one of his partners studied with Lecoq, and others studied with Carlo Mazzone-Clemente of Dell'arte. Also, Chris Bayes either taught or performed there (or maybe both)

The 34 minute interview is quite interesting, and well worth viewing.
(Thanks to Mike Daisey for the heads up.)

Not sure if it will be embedded below-- but if not, view it on Vimeo

Interview with Dominique Serrand from Minnesota Playlist on Vimeo.

Here's their log of the interview.

0:00.00 – 1. Will you miss your building? Peter Brook, Ariane Mnouchkine, and using old spaces to say something new.

3:41.29 – 2. Why couldn’t Jeune Lune survive? Artist-driven work, financial management, and patterns of charitable support from Minnesota’s family dynasties.

7:45.05 – 3. What good and bad do you see in the arts right now? The legacy amendment, the migrant nature of artists, creating new ensembles, the Guthrie’s Kushner festival, health care, and more.

12:07.27 – 4. Is the state of the arts in Minnesota healthy? Healthy institutions versus healthy artists, the United States Artists Foundation, and theater companies in Soviet-bloc Hungary.

16:58.03 – 5. Why does theater matter? Religion and the value of questioning.

19:39.22 – 6. What should we do? Public education, how Dominique discovered theater as a child, and exporting Robert Wilson and Robert Lepage to rural areas.

24:10.06 – 7. What will you do in the near future? Getting used to life without Jeune Lune, risk-taking, and developing a new work with four playwrights.

28:33.23 – 8. What if you were asked to run a new theater? A three-step plan including engaging with public schools, putting artists on salary, and bringing out illuminating, new visions of old work.

Arne Zaslow Classes in Seattle

Seattle Clown Classes with Arne Zaslove

Arne Zaslove is teaching a class on clowning and physical theater in Seattle on 7 consecutive Mondays starting July 7. Classes will be held from 7 pm- 8:30 pm.

Classes will be held at [SANCA] The School for Acrobatics and New Circus Arts – 674 S. Orcas, Seattle. The class is a very reasonable $133.

Arne Zaslove is a director, teacher, mask specialist and physical theater consultant. As a Fulbright scholar, Arne was the first American to study at Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris. There he absorbed a deep understanding of masks and of physical theater. He later apprenticed with commedia dell' arte master Carlo Mazzone-Clementi (who went on to found the Dell' Arte School of Physical Theatre in Blue Lake).

Arne's method of training actors was synthesized through years as Artistic Director of the National Theatre School in Canada, co-founder of the University of Washington PATP program, and Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia. His approach focuses on freeing the individual's body and imagination through a carefully devised sequence of physical exercises, mask work and improvisation. His students have gone on to varied and successful careers, from the circus to Stratford and Hollywood.

Arne has directed and taught in many regional theaters and universities across the U.S. and Canada. During his 20-year tenure as Artistic Director of the Bathhouse Theatre in Seattle, his updated Shakespeare productions and 17 versions of The Big Broadcast (a tribute to the golden age of radio) were especially popular with audiences for their sensitive interpretations and inventive flair. Arne has also worked extensively with David Shiner, and directed the cabaret/theatre/dinner show Pomp, Duck, and Circumstance, which has been featured in Berlin, Seattle, and San Francisco.

Dell'Arte Original Cast Returns to Korbel

The Dell'Arte Company is opening a new production tonight.

The Dell'Arte Company returns with original ensemble members Joan Schirle, Donald Forrest, and Michael Fields reprising their original roles as the Dugan Family

JUNE 26, 27, 28, 29 & JULY 3, 5, 6
(No performance on July 4)
8pm. Rooney Amphitheatre.
$15 general/$12 students & seniors/$5 kids under 12

A hilarious, farce-filled romp through all things Humboldt County, Dell'Arte's last Korbel production was nearly 10 years ago. But now the Dugans are back! Their little town of Korbel has fallen on economic hard times, and the only way to make a living is to grow medical marijuana. The only other employment option is at St. Mo's Hospital, a for-profit hospital built on the site of an old trailer park now owned by a casino. When a massive traffic accident caused by an out-of-control taco truck filled with machine guns (from the Blue Lake Police Department?) occurs in Korbel, the cast of characters end up at St. Mo's.
More trouble ensues from a massive power outage caused by the high-wattage demand of the marijuana grow houses. There's only enough juice left to keep one person alive on life support at St. Mo's. Who will survive?

"Korbel IV: The Accident" features live music and the hilarious physical performance style of the Dell'Arte ensemble. Back-up singers for Dell'Arte's house band directed by Tim Gray include Lila Nelson, Joyce Hough and Jaese Lecuyer. Also featuring Dell'Arte Company members David Ferney and Jacqueline Dandeneau. Come see Dell'Arte's "theatre of place" in action, as comic expertise satirizes and celebrates our local community. Dell'Arte creates theatre that is about this place and for this place - but speaks to the world.

Dell'arte MFA show in SF--June 13-15

Between Two Winters
Created by the MFA Ensemble of the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre

Catherine Tuttle, the accomplished and commanding mayor of Kalispell, MT, and her daughter, Naomi, travel to the deserts of Kuwait to honor a hero who was instrumental in extinguishing fires after the war in the Persian Gulf. During the course of the tribute, Catherine and this man recognize one another and now must reconcile a past they both have spent their lives running from. Between Two Winters is the culminating performance of the second year masters students in their study of the Tragic form.

Tragedy is a form that, at its root, pits the rational and ordered world against the world of terror and chaos. It deals with the human drive to step out of the chorus to stand for and proceed into the hero's journey, unwilling to be passive anymore in a world that defies logic and reason. This sets the tragic hero onto an irreversible collision course with the unrelenting forces of fate that result in a crash of cosmic proportions.

Authentic Dynamics Workshop in July (NY)

Authentic Dynamics: momentum and change for actors and clowns

Join Under the Table's Matt Chapman on Saturday, July 5 in Brooklyn for a unique physical investigation of the dynamics of the performer

This world works on certain undeniable dynamics. To perform with authenticity, the actor must have the ability to identify and navigate them. In this workshop, a few fundamentals of the stage will be explored, including johakyu ( beginning/middle/end, or how things grow, break, and resolve), minimum-to-maximum, evolution, and the rhythms of comedy. W

This workshop is appropriate for actors, clowns, and directors of all levels. Learn to see human action and comedy onstage more clearly.

Dress to move and bring water.

When: Saturday, July 5, 2008. 1-6:30 pm
Where: Triskelion Arts: 118 N. 11th St, 3rd Floor. (L to Bedford,
Williamsburg, Brooklyn)
Cost: $75 (Limited scholarships are available)
To register, reply by email. Payment holds your slot.

Note: Class size is limited. If it gets filled up, they'll add a repeat section on Sunday the 6th, so if you're interested in that, let Matt know quickly.
