fw: NACL holding auditions for female actor, NYC
Hello friend of NACL,
NACL is going to be holding auditions (on Saturday, September 27, 5-8pm, in
Brooklyn) to fill a role in our newest performance, ³The Uncanny Appearance
of Sherlock Holmes,² which will have a 3-week run at NYC¹s HERE Arts Center
this December 2-21. Please help us by taking a moment to forward this email
to any performers you think might be interested in helping to re-develop
this role, and perform it with us. I am spreading the information in this
way because you know NACL, and you know how specific and demanding our way
of work is, and so you will likely have a sense of whether or not someone
you know might be interested.
Ideally, the actor will have the following characteristics:
1. Female
2. Physically fit, able (or willing to become able) to perform basic
acrobatic maneuvres.
3. Some musical proficiency, both instrumental and vocal (the acting
ensemble in the show is a rock band, too!)
4. The willingness and availability to develop the role and perform during
our NYC run, and also other future gigs.
5. A nice, generous collaborator, and skilled actor.
The actor will be a member of the ensemble, which means she will play an
assortment of roles in the Holmes mystery (Mrs. Hudson, suspect Belle
Whittaker, Bishop Wilberforce, Agent Simpson of Scotland Yard, and others),
and she will be part of the rock band.
The show is a wild, highly physical, post-modern, rock and roll mystery
play. To learn more about the show, I think the easiest thing is to check
out the show¹s webpage: http://www.nacl.org/sherlock_show.htm
We will begin to integrate the actor into the ensemble for the two weeks
leading up to the show‹ Monday, Nov. 17 thru Sunday, December 30. During
this time, the ensemble will live and work at NACL¹s theatre center in the
Catskills, about 2.5 hours from NYC.
However, I will need to work for about three weeks with the new actor
between now and then, to develop the role. This work will ideally be done
upstate, too, but there is some flexibility of both location and timing of
this preliminary work.
Compensation: The actor will be paid a total of $2000, plus transportation
to/from the Catskillls, plus housing and food while in the Catskills. The
idea/hope is that each actor will then receive $500/week for any subsequent,
post-HERE gigs‹ right now, we are working on (for starters) bringing the
show to New Orleans in late Feb.-early Mar., 2009, and to the Network of
Ensemble Theaters Festival in Blue Lake, CA in June 2009.
The audition will be a combination of NACL physical training exercises,
group singing, and some cold reading from the script. Auditioners should
come prepared to move around, sweat, and have fun for a few hours. If a
person is super interested in auditioning, but can¹t make it on the 27th,
they should just contact me directly so we can speak about a potential
alternate audition time.
Interested actors should contact me via email at brad@nacl.org for more
details, etc.
Thank you for helping out.
I appreciate it.
Warm regards,
Brad

Dell'arte Goes to Bali 2009 Feb 9-March 12, 2009
FEBRUARY 9 - MARCH 12, 2009
Check out the Bali Blog 2007
by School Director Joan Schirle
Since 1996, Dell'Arte International has invited students, teachers, designers, directors, and artists to immerse themselves in the traditional arts of Bali and encounter the profound spirit of the Balinese people. In this unique and wonderfully successful program participants study traditional Balinese performing arts and crafts with village masters, as well as Dell'Arte mask and movement techniques led by Dell'Arte's Founding Artistic Director Joan Schirle and Dell'Arte faculty.
Bali is an extraordinary island where creativity is ordinary. In Bali, art serves the community, the religious practices, the economy and everyday living. This trip introduces students to Balinese performing arts in a way that allows them to experience how the Balinese live and create, and how family life and religious customs are woven into the creation of art. Unlike programs designed for art tourism, this program is designed for those who want to participate in the family life of outstanding Balinese master teachers as they teach.
Due to the sacred nature of most Balinese arts and the complete intertwining of daily life with ritual, this trip can be an opportunity to deepen our internal connection to our own artistic practice, as well as to take inspiration for creative projects.
THE PROGRAM
The program begins with a relaxing traditional Balinese buffet dinner, followed by three days of orientation to the language, customs, and ceremonies of Bali, as well as informal meetings with Balinese teachers to observe their work. Orientation will include a symposium on masks with famous carver I. B. Anom, visits to the studios of several mask carvers and puppet makers, and attendance at the famous kecak, or monkey-chant dance by firelight.
During the three and a half weeks of formal study, classes meet five days a week. Sometimes our study will take place in a classroom setting, sometimes outdoors, and most often in its traditional setting at village and temple ceremonies.
All along there will be time for recreation such as mountain hiking, beaches, scuba, nightlife and shopping, including guidance on how to buy Balinese crafts. Massage and revitalizing body treatments are available at extremely low cost.
• Mask Carving
• Mask Carving/ Balinese Dance (topeng)
• Shadow puppetry (wayang kulit) / Balinese dance
MASK CARVING
Learn from a Balinese master carver how to work with the wood, the traditional tools (axe, chisels, knives), and the paints to create traditional and contemporary masks. You may order and bring home their own complete set of tools for under $40. Students will spend 4 – 6 hours daily in the home of their teacher.
For a lively account of one man's encounter with mask carving, visit this link for interview with design Professor Ron Naverson (S. Illinois U, Carbondale), who was on our '03 trip.
MASK CARVING/BALINESE DANCE
Your morning will include one hour of Balinese dance. Topeng is the name of the masked dance form performed at most Balinese ceremonies. You will work in the studio of a Balinese master teacher, learning the basic walks, postures, arm and head movements in the mask. Topeng is based on stock characters like the king, minister, clown, and you will have the opportunity to see it performed at village ceremonies during your studies. Your carving program is the same as that described above, except that you will have a break after dance, and be carving in the afternoon, spending up to four hours daily with your teacher.
Your morning will include one hour of Balinese dance (see above). Your afternoon will be spent at the home of a shadow puppet master, or dalang, who will instruct you in the art of leather puppet making: design, using the metal punches, painting and rigging techniques. You will observe how the traditional shadow screen is used and develop a short shadow play. Those who are interested in learning Balinese music may elect to spend some time learning the gamelan instrument, the gender, which accompanies shadow plays.
For students who wish to study more dance, we will arrange for other teachers depending on your interest, at a small additional cost.

Voice workshops-- Patsy Rodenburg
Patsy Rodenburg Voice workshops, Los Angeles--Aug 15 - 25
Sent by: Joan Schirle
Wed Aug 6, 2008 1:27 pm (PDT)
All:
Patsy is a superb teacher who only comes to the US a couple of times a year. I worked with her last January in LA. In order to do any of her advanced workshops you have to do one of her introductory workshops first. Her first intro workshop is full, but she's doing another one of those focusing on Shakespeare, followed by two advanced workshops.
*Patsy Rodenburg's workshops offer an in depth exploration of voice and breath. Students will experience one of the greatest acting and script analysis classes available. All workshops are rooted in the works of William Shakespeare.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS and DATES:
Friday 15th August (10am -6pm) & Saturday 16th August (10am - 6pm)--THIS ONE IS FULL*
*Three Circles of Energy (2 Day Workshop)** **- *In this workshop, Patsy will introduce her unique method of working with the 'three circles of energy' that provide the basic tools for everyone to develop their 'presence' on stage, in auditions and interviews and in all areas of their personal and professional lives. Topics of discussion will include her books and her history of working with some of the world's leading actors and directors. Students will learn Patsy's techniques to free their natural voice. They will focus on releasing their "energy of denial" - not being fully connected with the language and their audience.
* * Open to all students. Those who have studied with Patsy in the past and would like an intensive review are encouraged to take this class!*
Monday 18th August (10am - 6pm) & Tuesday 19th August (10am - 6pm)
Introduction to Performing Shakespeare in a STATE OF READINESS (2 Day Workshop)
This workshop is open to anyone who has not worked with Patsy previously or who wants a refresher on approaching Shakespeare. This is a foundation workshop for people who are interested in understanding and performing Shakespeare. Students will work with both group and individual exercises.

*Circle Intensive- Performing Shakespeare in a STATE OF READINESS (3 Day Workshop)
This is an advanced workshop in focus and energy. Incorporating the tools learned in her past classes, participants will learn how to use Shakespeare's words while being fully alert, living, breathing, listening and reacting. Patsy will teach her groundbreaking techniques of forming an acting ensemble ready to perform a Shakespeare play. Each student will have the opportunity to work individually with Patsy. *Only students who have completed the Three Circles of Energy workshop or the Introduction to Performing Shakespeare workshop or have previously studied with Patsy can apply. You may apply to both workshops at the same time.
Monday 25th August (10am - 6pm), Tuesday 26th August (10am - 6pm) & Wednesday 27th August (10am - 10pm)*

Students may also enroll in pairs or groups if they would like to work on a scene together. All those enrolled should be prepared to form an acting ensemble ready to perform a Shakespeare scene.

Arne Zaslow Classes in Seattle
Seattle Clown Classes with Arne Zaslove
Arne Zaslove is teaching a class on clowning and physical theater in Seattle on 7 consecutive Mondays starting July 7. Classes will be held from 7 pm- 8:30 pm.
Classes will be held at [SANCA] The School for Acrobatics and New Circus Arts – 674 S. Orcas, Seattle. The class is a very reasonable $133.
Arne Zaslove is a director, teacher, mask specialist and physical theater consultant. As a Fulbright scholar, Arne was the first American to study at Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris. There he absorbed a deep understanding of masks and of physical theater. He later apprenticed with commedia dell' arte master Carlo Mazzone-Clementi (who went on to found the Dell' Arte School of Physical Theatre in Blue Lake).
Arne's method of training actors was synthesized through years as Artistic Director of the National Theatre School in Canada, co-founder of the University of Washington PATP program, and Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia. His approach focuses on freeing the individual's body and imagination through a carefully devised sequence of physical exercises, mask work and improvisation. His students have gone on to varied and successful careers, from the circus to Stratford and Hollywood.
Arne has directed and taught in many regional theaters and universities across the U.S. and Canada. During his 20-year tenure as Artistic Director of the Bathhouse Theatre in Seattle, his updated Shakespeare productions and 17 versions of The Big Broadcast (a tribute to the golden age of radio) were especially popular with audiences for their sensitive interpretations and inventive flair. Arne has also worked extensively with David Shiner, and directed the cabaret/theatre/dinner show Pomp, Duck, and Circumstance, which has been featured in Berlin, Seattle, and San Francisco.
To find out more about the class, contact Tara Jensen at SANCA 206-652-4433 or visit the website listed below:

A hilarious, farce-filled romp through all things Humboldt County, Dell'Arte's last Korbel production was nearly 10 years ago. But now the Dugans are back! Their little town of Korbel has fallen on economic hard times, and the only way to make a living is to grow medical marijuana. The only other employment option is at St. Mo's Hospital, a for-profit hospital built on the site of an old trailer park now owned by a casino. When a massive traffic accident caused by an out-of-control taco truck filled with machine guns (from the Blue Lake Police Department?) occurs in Korbel, the cast of characters end up at St. Mo's.
More trouble ensues from a massive power outage caused by the high-wattage demand of the marijuana grow houses. There's only enough juice left to keep one person alive on life support at St. Mo's. Who will survive?
"Korbel IV: The Accident" features live music and the hilarious physical performance style of the Dell'Arte ensemble. Back-up singers for Dell'Arte's house band directed by Tim Gray include Lila Nelson, Joyce Hough and Jaese Lecuyer. Also featuring Dell'Arte Company members David Ferney and Jacqueline Dandeneau. Come see Dell'Arte's "theatre of place" in action, as comic expertise satirizes and celebrates our local community. Dell'Arte creates theatre that is about this place and for this place - but speaks to the world.

Dell'arte MFA show in SF--June 13-15
Between Two Winters
Created by the MFA Ensemble of the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre
Catherine Tuttle, the accomplished and commanding mayor of Kalispell, MT, and her daughter, Naomi, travel to the deserts of Kuwait to honor a hero who was instrumental in extinguishing fires after the war in the Persian Gulf. During the course of the tribute, Catherine and this man recognize one another and now must reconcile a past they both have spent their lives running from. Between Two Winters is the culminating performance of the second year masters students in their study of the Tragic form.
Tragedy is a form that, at its root, pits the rational and ordered world against the world of terror and chaos. It deals with the human drive to step out of the chorus to stand for and proceed into the hero's journey, unwilling to be passive anymore in a world that defies logic and reason. This sets the tragic hero onto an irreversible collision course with the unrelenting forces of fate that result in a crash of cosmic proportions.
